Week 6 of Training

I have been working at Ornasteel for 6 weeks. Although everyday is a different experience, but there were times where work gets boring.

What I was assigned to do since I came was documentation of a few civil works in Ornasteel. My daily routine is site survey and taking picture every 1 to 2 hours.

The good thing about my dept is we have some food to chew on every few days. Until today, I've tasted KFC, small white coloured Jambu (usually pink coloured), Baby full moon cake, fried banana, and keropok. haha... This is one of the good things in my dept. Besides all the food, tea breaks at 10 am and 3 pm are desirable. We can just sit back in front of the PC and taste our coffee, Milo, or Oats. Well, my dept only have 2 PC that is connected online, so the chance of getting those PC are slightly small.

Since I have some free time in the company, I try to maximize the free time to do my report. But I really not sure what to include in my report. Sigh... ~_~"

Electrical Powered Sports Car: Tesla Roadster

The Tesla Roadster's chassis is a heavily-modified version of the Lotus Elise chassis.

A electrical powered sport car from Tesla Roadster Motors. It runs on a three phase, four pole electric induction motor.

Tech Specs:
* Acceleration: zero to 60 in about 4 seconds
* Dimensions: 155.4 inches long, 73.7 inches wide, 44.4 inches tall with a 92.6-inch wheelbase
* Weight: 2,500 pounds (subject to change due to safety regulations)
* Top Speed: Over 130 mph
* Range: 250 miles EPA highway
* Battery Life: Useful battery life in excess of 100,000 miles

Unique features:
* A unique PIN to start the car and prevent hot-wiring
* A Homelink transceiver you can program to control radio-frequency controlled devices such as your community gate and garage door
* A dock connector for your iPod
* Electrically-controlled door handles (there's no mechanical lock, which makes it more difficult to break into the car)

This baby runs on 6,831 lithium-ion batteries, similar to those we used for laptops.

A full charge requires only 3.5 hours from completely dead batteries, and can cover a distance of 400 km on single fully charged batteries.

Online in the office

After 3 weeks of training at Ornasteel, I've learned that heavy industries are actually a very dangerous place for people to work at. Imagine 22 tons of steel coil fell on to your body. ouch...

These few days I finally have some time (and guts too!) to go online using the PC in the office. Out of 10 PC in the office, only 4 are able to online. But for engineers, we can only use 2.

Here are some picture that I've took as part of my work for construction work progress monitoring.

Part 1:

Part 2:

What is an Engineer ?

Form 5:

  • Do all the maths and physics calculations
  • It's a cool occupation
  • Can earn a lot of $$$

University:

  • Almost everything around us is built by engineers
  • Consist of subjects that make my head burst
  • Study almost EVERYTHING
    • From fluid to solid structures
    • From temperature to pressure
    • Workshop to Computer Design
    • AND I THOUGHT MECHANICAL ENGINEERS ARE SUPERMAN, THEY MUST KNOW EVERYTHING !!!
  • Wat we learned has no practical use in our working days?

Practical (Mechanical Maintainance Department) :

  • Dirty working environment
  • Dangerous working environment:
    • 20 tons of steel coil hanging just 2 meters above
    • Exposure to Hydrocloric Acid
    • Exposure to Alkaline (More corrosive than Acid)
    • Heating temperature as high as 500 °C
    • Overhead cranes moving everywhere, always look above when traveling within the factory
  • 8 am to 530 pm working hours, with 1 hour lunch break
  • 24-hour On Call, means u have to come for work at 3 am in the morning if there's any machine breakdown
  • Solve any problems regarding the machines
  • Replacing a spare part is complicated:
    • Must find the lowest supplier that provides the same spare part
    • Must work within the given budget, overbudget will led you to the manager room
    • If a spare part is not available, design and fabrication is required
  • WE USE THE THINGS WE LEARNED FROM UNIVERSITY (maybe for Maintainance Dept only)
